“Bah,” said Scrooge, “Humbug.”
This is a story that became the seed for so many stories, Carols, adaptations, television series, movies and what not! What Dickens conjured with three ghosts and a stingy inveterate senile miser, was never done before or could be equaled again with all the elves, fairies and Santa to the rescue.
The tale is spun so seamlessly through the shortcomings and sheer disregard of Christian feelings exhibited by the protagonist Scrooge, the hideousness of his actions, the tastelessness of his selfish attitude and his ultimate redemption in the face of death and fear.
Through our frame of reference, we are able to see how the insipidness of actions and attitude of one man dims the light on the life of everyone around (-like here, his nephew Fred, Bob Cracthit and Tiny Tim, the neighbours). We also become a part of the haunting and as the visions grow intense, we see the change of heart taking place inside Scrooge. We can actually sympathize with the old man despite the horrendous life he has led. We forgive.
The goodwill that ensues after the epiphany is overwhelming. The story is so redeeming and gives so much hope in humanity. It’s never too late and it’s never, ever, too Christmassy!

They are, I love to hold old ones in my hand, I even love the ancient smell of the pages.

Smell, yes!! I love the hand me downs too honestly. I feel like they give the books more “character”, but that may be just in my head!
